A few years ago, when my middle daughter was three, we were discussing her favorite preschool job: leading the lunchtime prayer. I said that maybe she could be a pastor, like our own pastor Todd, when she grew up. I will be pastor Todd! And I will live in his house! My husband has always supported the full participation of women in the church, and I gradually came to agree with him. Over time, however, the restrictions on women, while minimal at our church, chafed more and more. So when we moved to a new state, we hoped for a church in our denomination that ordained women. We did find one. As much as I appreciated his support of women, I wanted to actually see women preaching and serving.
They encouraged each of us to become kind and empathetic people. They encouraged each of us to pursue our dreams. They encouraged each of us to have personal relationships with God…. But, they had a ton of rules…And sometimes I found creative read: I lied ways to get around these rules….
Father, father was a preacher, I’m almost certain he hates me. But he ain’t gotta date me and look, his baby is grown. And she decides on her own who resides.
I wrote this piece because I want people to get married and I am an advocate for marriage. This post is for everyone, but it is directed at my peers. So if you are 5 years older than me or 5 years younger than me, I am talking to you. This post includes quite personal stories from my life. Context: Around October I was confused as to how to move my love life forward. Even if I have to wait 10 years I was not going to make the mistake of giving someone that title, only to have my heart pulled out of my chest, tried on and then returned like an ASOS package.
Essentially I was just promising myself that this time I would be serious, if I saw a red flag I would duck out, if the Holy Spirit said no I would listen. One had a child, one did not, one was a believer and the other was NOT. Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. This portion of scripture is talking specifically about marriage and it clearly says you should not MARRY an unbeliever. In my world Christian life dating leads to marriage, therefore most people logically advise that you should not even date unbelievers and to be clear, I completely agree and believe this.
However let me give you some TEA…. As some of you may know having read my clubbing blogpost, I love people, I love meeting people, I love strangers and I use my extrovert nature as an opportunity to minister to strangers, NO CAP. At the time I met John in I thought I would never marry anyone, I planned to just be an evangelist and adopt a child when I got older.

I watched as he tugged at his black-hooded jacket. Seated in a metal fold out chair, he extended his hands and began to pray. Bold, unafraid, and unashamed he was diligent in his task. I sat in awe, watching as he closed his eyes and wept. I saw the face of God in a stranger, in a room full of metal fold out chairs.

Some simply stated they agreed with the accuracy of the article, while others shared much more deeply intimate and personal reflections. It seems the contemporary church culture has created an environment where an effort to uphold godly standards from church leaders becomes a silencing of their children. This stigma follows preachers kids, ministry staff kids, and missionary kids. This should grieve us because we, as the church, share part of the responsibility.
The call of a preacher is both a dangerous and risky occupation. I promised anonymity in exchange for transparent conversation and offered a safe place to share. Some are still actively involved in and serve in their local church; others have abandoned the faith or the church entirely. Another shared that now, as an adult, when people learn about his past, they assume he was a rebellious teenager in high school or college with a track record of grievous mistakes.
I saw how ruthless people were to my parents, siblings and me. This was a fairly common response from female participants, both young and old.

They should dress conservatively. Spend more time at church than at parties. Yet many TV shows and movies have skewed that image. The majority of the show depicts the teens in a negative way by testing the boundaries of parental expectations when it comes to premarital sex, dating, drinking, and any other behavior that counteracts with the image of a good Christian girl. Do they live up to the positive and negative stereotypes? Or are their family lives pretty normal?

But seriously, outside of the controversy the show has created among some, who object to these families-of-the-cloth parading their foolishness around on TV for a few bucks, the show itself is not bad. In fact, I believe it offers keen insight into the difficulties that are associated with growing up. You may commence with waving your church fan.
