Ford was a fascinating man, and the story of his early years, as well as the conception and development of the Fordson tractor, is worth retelling. His father, William, was a fairly prosperous farmer, but young Henry hated the hard work and drudgery of farming. Always fascinated by anything mechanical, Henry left the farm in to work in a Detroit machine shop, and he became an expert watch repairman as well.
Later, he learned about electricity at the Edison Illuminating Co. On Christmas Eve of , Henry tested on the kitchen sink a one-cylinder engine he had built and, in June , he built and drove his first car, the 4 horsepower, 20 mph Quadricycle. The first Ford car was the Model A, with a horizontally-opposed, 2-cylinder, 8 horsepower engine and a two-speed transmission, both of which were built by the Dodge Brothers, who later built a car of their own.
Model T. Finally, on Oct. Lightweight and mechanically simple, with a 20 horsepower, four-cylinder engine, the Model T could run 40 MPH on good roads. To this end, Henry experimented with steam and, in about , he built a steam tractor that ran all of 40 feet. This machine used a four-cylinder, 20 horsepower engine and 2-speed transmission from a Model B car, while the radiator, steering and hubs were from the big Model K.

Although he had worked for many years for J. Mark allowed him to drive his Petrol Dexta at the Brimfield ploughing day in Herefordshire and on road runs over many years until he was offered the tractor he now owns. Over the past 17 years Brian has been collecting details of the tractors including engine numbers, serial numbers and casting codes from all cast parts for the register.
By collecting all these numbers from each tractor it can be seen which ones are original and which ones are made up out of parts. Quite a number found have originally been diesels and have had the petrol engine fitted at a later date. Originally reports in tractor magazines stated that only three or four petrol prototypes were built but that proved incorrect as there are now tractors recorded on the register and more waiting to have their details collected from Australia and New Zealand.
Records show that engines were bought from Standard Motor Company by Ford so there should be at least that number of tractors still out there, although some have gone to the scrapman. Ford Motor Company had little or no information on the tractor when originally approached and initially claimed they never built such a tractor. Reports suggest they contracted the work to Turner Manufacturing at Wolverhampton but despite contact with the archivist no record of a build number of any tractors can be found in the paperwork remaining.

Henry Ford and his first tractor date back to , when he had his Company began building the two-plow Fordson tractor, painted light gray.
Popular for its easy starting diesel engine, its small light-weight dimensions and its ability with a match plough, the high-selling machine has many followers who rekindle memories of its heyday. Launched by the Ford Motor Company 60 years ago this month, the Dexta proved to be a perfect sibling for the larger Fordson Major, and found favour on many farms. When the little grey Fergie with its complete Ferguson System took farming by storm in the post-War years Fordson, which had commanded the market with its N and E27N models, started to suffer.
This resulted in sales staff putting pressure on design staff to come up with a competitor. The backdrop to the intense rivalry between Ford and Ferguson dates to when Ford initially built Ferguson system tractors as the Ford Ferguson. Ford later upgraded it to the 8N model in by which time Ferguson returned to the UK to build his tractor at Coventry.
Although many farmers used the heavier Fordson Majors for ploughing and other heavy tasks, they had a need for smaller tractors for row crop, carting and loader duties. The company started working on ideas in the late s by using an 8 horsepower hp side valve engine from an E04A Anglia car and a three-speed gearbox. However more serious development went on with great care being taken by designer John Foxwell not to infringe any Ferguson patents.
The gearbox from the 8N was used with an extra two gears created and a Perkins P3 diesel engine was fitted. Ford wanted to build the engine in house but in the end, it made the castings at its new foundry while Perkins assembled it. Ironically it was a similar engine to what was eventually installed in the rival MF 35 tractor in Ford had designated its new tractor as the E, however by the time of its launch in it had gained the name of the Fordson Dexta and debate continues as to how this name came about.
The official launch took place for trade delegates, dealers and press at Alexandra Palace, London, on November 19 to 26 that year.

AJ You should not have a four cylinder Perkins in there,the original was a 6 cylinder Perkins P6, someone must have converted it,I will try to post the picture I’v got in the photo section. These engines were available for the E27N as an approved conversion as well as the P6. Going by the serial number it looks to be a later engine and more likely a 4.

Design begun in to replace the old E27N model which dated from the s. The plan being to have one basic engine that would be built in diesel, petrol, or vaporising oil versions. The new tractor was in the 40 h. To equalize the power, the diesel model had a bore that was larger to increase engine capacity from 3, to 3, cc. The tractor was larger and heavier than the Fordson E27N it replaced. The transmission was a six forward and twin reverse gear model actuated by a single plate clutch fitted with spur gear final drive, and optional side mounted belt pulley.
This major upgrade of the E1A range was to be the last. The introduction of “Qualitrol”, flow control and position control hydraulic system was a significant improvement over previous models.
